The purpose of this proposal is to create a dyslexia-friendly classroom library that provides students at Educational Pathways Academy with exciting new opportunities to discover the joy of reading through appropriate and engaging texts for daily practice and leisure reading. Dyslexic students require structured literacy instruction and consistent opportunities to practice with decodable texts that align with their phonics scope and sequence. Based on my experience and training, I have selected a wide variety of books that foster independent reading, help students build fluency, and limit frustration. This project addresses the need for a library tailored to the literacy needs of students with language-based learning disabilities, ensuring that my students have access to materials that are accessible, meaningful, and supportive of their reading development. An influx of brand-new reading material is also exciting for students, and I hope to provide them with many new books to explore.
The primary learning goal of our classroom library is to strengthen students’ reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension by providing daily opportunities to read texts that are intentionally selected for their learning needs. By building a library rich in decodable books and high-interest/low-readability (“hi-lo”) titles, students will increase their time spent reading, apply phonics skills with confidence, and develop the independence and motivation essential for long-term literacy success.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
All students at Educational Pathways Academy are working hard to overcome the challenges associated with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and other learning disabilities. Many students have a combination of diagnoses. I work closely with each individual student to support their progress, and I make it a point to know each child personally. Having a rich classroom library will allow me to guide students in choosing books that reinforce the skills they are learning while also building their confidence. Many of the books I am requesting follow a character or theme, and it is my goal that students will develop a love for a particular genre, helping them build not only a love of reading but also a relationship with literacy that will support their learning now and form a lasting habit for the future.
Students will use the books several times each week in Language Arts to practice and strengthen fluency and comprehension. The library will also serve as a resource for early finisher activities in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science, ensuring that students always have meaningful, accessible reading material available. To encourage accountability and celebrate progress, students will log the books they complete on a recording sheet, allowing them to track their growth over time.
By creating a library aligned with the specific needs of my students, I will help them approach reading with confidence instead of frustration. When students can successfully decode and understand what they are reading, they begin to see themselves as capable, independent readers. That confidence extends beyond reading and supports stronger writing skills, deeper engagement across content areas, and, most importantly, a genuine love for books. This classroom library project is designed to meet the needs of students at Educational Pathways Academy by removing barriers to independent reading, fostering success, and building lifelong learning habits.
What will improve/change for students:
- Multiple access points: Picture-based graphic novels and speech-bubble formats reduce text load, while decodables build decoding accuracy and confidence.
- High interest, low frustration: Engaging plots and familiar formats keep students motivated, increase time-on-text, and build confidence in reading.
- Diverse reading levels within each grade: Hi-lo and leveled readers ensure that every student can find accessible, enjoyable books that meet their needs.
How outcomes will be measured:
- Student reading logs tracking the number and type of books completed.
- Classroom progress monitoring in reading fluency and comprehension.
- Teacher observation of increased engagement, confidence, and willingness to read independently.
I will use the grant funds to purchase the following 137 books, which will provide a complete class library filled with exciting opportunities for my students to make meaningful gains on their journey to literacy.
