I am raising funds to bring a powerful, engaging social skills platform to my speech and language students, one that uses video modeling, interactive games, and hands-on activities to teach real-world skills in a way students genuinely connect with.

Project Description

Many of my students struggle with social skills, particularly when it comes to reading body language and facial expressions, holding conversations with peers and adults, navigating social situations, and regulating their emotions. That’s what makes the Everyday Speech program such a valuable tool. The Everyday Speech website offers a ready-to-use social skills platform that makes learning these essential social and behavioral skills more concrete and accessible. Through video modeling, interactive games, and hands-on activities (with follow-up worksheets that can even be sent home), it helps ensure that learning is consistent and meaningful across environments.

Video modeling is a powerful, evidence-based teaching strategy that has been shown to be especially effective for students with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum. By watching peers demonstrate specific social or behavioral skills on video, students are better able to understand, imitate, and apply those skills in real-life situations. Research consistently supports video modeling as a highly effective tool for teaching everything from conversation skills to emotional regulation, because it provides a clear, consistent, and repeatable model.

This resource will help my students build confidence and improve their communication in and out of the classroom. Social skills are essential not just for participating in class, but for building friendships, navigating everyday challenges, and creating a sense of belonging at school. When students feel connected, they’re more engaged, more motivated to come to school, and ready to learn. These skills also lay the foundation for future success by helping them manage relationships, resolve conflicts, and problem-solve effectively throughout life. With your support, we can give them the tools they need to connect, grow, and thrive, both now and well into adulthood. 

 

Expected Outcomes

With access to the Everyday Speech program, my students will gain stronger, more functional social communication skills. Specifically, I expect improvements in their ability to initiate and maintain conversations, understand nonverbal cues like body language and facial expressions, regulate their emotions more effectively, and problem-solve social situations.
Progress will be tracked through observations and data collection. I’ll also gather input from teachers, parents, and support staff to assess how well students are generalizing these skills across environment 

 

Purpose of Funding

These grant funds will be used to purchase a subscription to the Everyday Speech website which will be used to explicitly teach social skills to my speech and language students.
