The purpose of this project is to enhance learning outcomes for kindergarten students with autism by implementing a variety of structured task boxes designed to support individualized, hands-on instruction. Task boxes are self-contained, visual, and tactile activities that target early academic skills, fine motor development, and independence. This project addresses the need for differentiated, accessible learning tools that align with the unique cognitive, sensory, and behavioral needs of students on the autism spectrum.
Students with autism often benefit from predictable, visually supported learning environments and repetitive, structured tasks. Task boxes provide these supports while allowing students to work at their own pace, practice skills independently, and build confidence. The learning goals addressed include improving early literacy and numeracy, increasing on-task behavior and engagement, promoting independent work habits, and reinforcing skills outlined in each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Through this project, students will gain greater autonomy, improved academic readiness, and stronger foundational skills that will support long-term educational success.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
This project involves the creation and implementation of a comprehensive task box system in a kindergarten classroom specifically designed for students with autism. Task boxes are structured, hands-on learning activities stored in individual containers, focusing on a wide range of skills such as early literacy, numeracy, fine motor development, sorting, matching, life skills, and following multi-step directions. Activities will be carefully selected or created to align with each student’s IEP goals, developmental level, and learning style. Materials will include manipulatives, laminated visuals, velcro pieces, and adaptive tools that promote independent engagement.
This project will directly meet the needs of the students by providing structured, predictable, and engaging learning experiences tailored to their individual strengths and challenges. Many students in the classroom struggle with attention, transitions, and processing verbal instructions. Task boxes offer a consistent way to practice academic and functional skills while reducing anxiety and overstimulation. For the classroom, this system promotes smoother routines, reduces reliance on 1:1 prompting, and maximizes instructional time. For the school, this project supports inclusive education efforts by fostering student independence and preparing young learners with autism for greater participation in general education settings as they progress through grade levels.
As a result of this project, students in the kindergarten autism classroom will demonstrate increased independence, engagement, and academic readiness through the consistent use of task boxes. Specifically, students will improve in task completion and sustained attention during independent and small-group work, academic skills in early literacy, math, and problem-solving, fine motor development through hands-on materials, the ability to follow multi-step directions with reduced prompting, and overall confidence and self-regulation as they experience success with structured, individualized tasks. These outcomes will be measured through a combination of teacher-created tracking sheets, progress monitoring aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, and the collection of student work samples over time. Additionally, behavioral data will be used to assess engagement, time on task, and reductions in off-task or disruptive behaviors. Staff and family feedback will also be gathered to provide anecdotal evidence of increased independence, confidence, and skill application in both classroom and home settings.
Grant funds will be used specifically to create and enhance a structured task box system and independent learning centers for kindergarten students with autism. Funds will be used to purchase materials such as plastic storage bins for organizing individual task boxes, hands-on manipulatives including counting bears, magnetic letters, shape sorters, puzzles, and other tactile tools that support early math, literacy, and fine motor development. These materials will be used to build a variety of self-contained, skill-focused task boxes and learning centers that promote independence, engagement, and routine. All items purchased will directly support daily instruction by providing students with consistent, accessible learning opportunities that are tailored to their developmental and educational needs.
