1. Goal(s)
a) Purpose & Need
The purpose of this project is to create a more inclusive and supportive classroom environment for students with sensory processing needs. Many children struggle with self-regulation, focus, and emotional balance when they experience overstimulation or under-stimulation in the classroom. Without appropriate tools, these challenges can lead to frustration, anxiety, and missed learning opportunities. This project seeks to provide sensory-friendly resources that help students regulate their bodies and minds so they can engage more fully in learning.
b) Learning Goal/Academic Outcome
By reducing sensory barriers, students will be better able to concentrate on instruction, participate actively, and demonstrate growth in core academic skills. Specifically, the project supports goals of improved attention, stronger self-regulation, and greater access to the curriculum, which are essential for academic achievement in literacy, mathematics, and other subject areas.
Class Furniture - Carpets, transitional seating/desks, etc.
2. Project Description
a) Project & Activities
This project will bring sensory-support tools into the classroom to provide students with proactive strategies for regulation. Items such as flexible seating, noise-reducing headphones, tactile fidgets, and weighted lap pads will be made available as part of daily classroom routines. These tools will be incorporated into transitions, small-group work, and independent study times.
b) Meeting Classroom Needs
By integrating sensory resources, the classroom will better meet the diverse needs of all learners. Students who may otherwise struggle with attention, overstimulation, or anxiety will have supportive tools to help them focus and remain engaged. This not only benefits individual students but also creates a calmer and more productive classroom environment for everyone.
3. Expected Outcomes
a) Improvements for Students
Increased ability for students to remain focused during instruction and independent work.
Improved emotional regulation and decreased instances of disruptive behavior caused by sensory overwhelm.
Greater student participation, confidence, and overall sense of belonging within the classroom community.
b) Measurement of Outcomes
These outcomes will be measured through:
Teacher observation and documentation of student engagement and behavior.
Progress monitoring in academic areas, noting whether students are meeting or exceeding learning benchmarks with greater consistency.
Informal student reflections on how the sensory tools support their focus and comfort in the classroom.
Grant funds will be used to purchase sensory-friendly classroom materials that directly support the needs of students with sensory processing differences. Items may include:
Flexible seating options (e.g., wobble stools, balance cushions, beanbag chairs)
Noise-canceling headphones to reduce auditory distractions
Weighted lap pads or blankets to provide calming input
Handheld fidgets and tactile tools for focus during instruction
These items will create an inclusive classroom environment where students have access to the resources they need to thrive academically and socially. The requested funds directly align with the purpose of ensuring equitable access to learning for all students.
