a) The overall purpose of this request is to allow our students the opportunity to learn about the efforts made to secure the natural beauty of our surrounding community and the environment we share with it. It will address the need for balance and awareness of invasive species and what can be done to protect our native species for future success.
b) Students will understand the research driven practices of local scientists in Naples and Collier County in tracking and eradicating invasive pythons in surrounding areas. Students will be able to ask questions and tour the research facility to understand the program for studying and removing invasive pythons in a manner which is exciting and engaging.
Community Partnerships - Gulfshore Playhouse, Naples Players, Naples Zoo, Botanical Gardens, etc.
a) Students will:
• Learn about python biology and behavior.
• Understand the impact of pythons on native wildlife, such as raccoons, opossums, and native wading birds.
• Discover the methods used to track and remove pythons, including the use of tracker snakes.
• Engage in a Q&A session with conservation scientists, providing an invaluable chance to ask questions and learn about potential career paths in environmental science.
b) This field trip aligns directly with our classroom learning objectives and will enhance students' understanding of real-world conservation challenges.
a) This unique opportunity will allow students to utilize their thinking and listening skills, ask appropriate, intentional questions, and formulate possible, realistic solutions to the issue of invasive species in SWFL, our home.
b) Prior to the field trip, students will work collaboratively to research how the issue began and what efforts have been used, successfully and unsuccessfully, to address the issue. They will look at the problem of invasive species both on land and in the surrounding waters and propose a solution outlining both benefits and drawbacks to the action. This will allow students to see the whole picture of what actions are taken and their outcomes.
This proposal requests $992.00 to fund a field trip for the new Environmental Management class to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Nature Center. The primary goal is to provide students with a hands-on learning experience about the invasive Burmese python population in the Everglades. The Conservancy's experts will teach students about the ecological damage these pythons cause, the ongoing research and management efforts, and the importance of conservation. The funds will cover transportation and admission fees for 80 students, ensuring all students can participate regardless of their financial situation.
