Everyone loves a class pet. It’s a rewarding hands-on experience that everyone should be able to enjoy. The goal of this project is to maintain an engaging and interactive learning environment for students by incorporating our class pet, a bearded dragon named Dartanian, into our classroom. This project will focus on providing the necessary food, supplies, educational materials, and enhancements to ensure the proper care of the bearded dragon while integrating it into various subjects. The bearded dragon will serve as both a living science lesson and a source of inspiration for critical thinking, responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, PBIS, LIM, etc.
This project aims to provide a classroom habitat for our bearded dragon, enabling students to observe and interact with the animal while learning about biology, ecosystems, animal care, and responsibility. The funds will be used to purchase necessary supplies such as:
Bearded Dragon Habitat: Maintenance for our current terrarium includes heating lamps, bedding, and decorative items to create a comfortable and safe environment.
Food and Supplies: Proper food (mealworms, superworms, vegetables, etc.), calcium supplements, and cleaning supplies to maintain the habitat.
Educational Materials: Books, magazines, and digital resources to teach students about reptiles, ecosystems, and animal behavior.
Classroom Enhancements: Supplies for integrating the bearded dragon into lessons, including science project materials, observation charts, and project kits that allow students to learn about animal biology.
Throughout the school year, the bearded dragon will be incorporated into lessons in science, mathematics (e.g., tracking growth, diet, and behavior), and social studies (e.g., exploring the habitat of bearded dragons in the wild). Students will be responsible for aspects of the dragon's care, providing real-world applications for teamwork, empathy, and scientific inquiry.
By the end of the school year, students will:
-Develop a deeper understanding of animal biology, specifically reptiles, and how they fit into ecosystems.
-Learn responsibility through the care and upkeep of the bearded dragon.
-Be inspired to ask questions, hypothesize, and engage in scientific observation.
-Gain insight into the importance of animal welfare and ethical treatment of living creatures.
-Engage in classroom projects and activities that foster creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking.
-Strengthen their connection to nature, developing an interest in environmental stewardship and conservation.
Additionally, the bearded dragon will become an integral part of the classroom community, promoting student interaction, cooperation, and fostering a sense of shared responsibility among students. Through this project, we want to create lasting educational experiences and memories that will inspire a lifelong love for science and nature.
The items above will provide everything our Beardie needs to thrive in his habitat, from food and structure enhancements to vet visits and supplements. The funding will also help provide our students with books and magazines to enhance their knowledge of Bearded Dragons and other reptiles.
