The purpose of this project is to create a classroom writing center stocked with thesauruses, dictionaries, and Spanish-to-English dictionaries. These tools will help students overcome barriers with vocabulary, spelling, and grammar so they can express their ideas more fully. They also provide critical support for English Language Learners, giving every student the chance to grow as a confident, independent writer.
The goal is to strengthen students’ writing by improving vocabulary, word choice, and mechanics. The expected outcome is higher-quality essays and greater student confidence, as they learn to see themselves as capable writers with important ideas to share.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
This project will ensure students always have the tools they need at their fingertips. Whether they’re writing essays, responding to prompts, or revising drafts, they’ll be able to expand their vocabulary, polish their grammar, and choose words that make their writing shine. For my English Language Learners, these resources are especially powerful—they level the playing field and give every student a voice. The writing center will also utilize colored highlighters so students can have a deeper understanding of how the rubrics work, and how their choices directly impact their scores. When students finish publishing their essays there will also be a few games and activities for students to work on so they are still building necessary skills, but in a fun new way. This will also give quicker/stronger students more independence when they finish, which will allow me to have more time conferencing and supporting readers in a small group.
Students will write with more confidence and independence, using stronger vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. English Language Learners will have the support they need to fully express their ideas. Overall, essays will improve in quality, and students will begin to see themselves as real writers.
Growth will be measured through writing rubrics, pre- and post-writing samples, and by observing increased independence and confidence during the writing process.
Grant funds will be used to purchase the above items. These items will be used to support their writing and reading by helping them build their vocabulary in a variety of ways and styles.
