a) The purpose of this project is to provide students at our Title 1 school with access to ceramic glazes, so that students have the opportunity to complete their clay projects with colorful, lasting finishes. We are currently working with unglazed pottery, and the hope is to give our Sabal Palm artists a full artistic process with ceramics.
b) By adding glazes, students will be able to explore color theory, experiment with texture and design, and gain a deeper understanding of the ceramics medium. This project supports art education standards that emphasize creating, presenting, and responding to works of art.

Goal(s)

a) The purpose of this project is to provide students at our Title 1 school with access to ceramic glazes, so that students have the opportunity to complete their clay projects with colorful, lasting finishes. We are currently working with unglazed pottery, and the hope is to give our Sabal Palm artists a full artistic process with ceramics.

Category

School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.

Project Description

a) By learning how surface design and glazing bring artwork to life, students will participate in hands-on ceramic projects where they could shape their clay projects. Adding the glazes will be a transformative experience so that finished artworks become functional and expressive.
b) This project meets student needs by offering a complete art-making process, starting from forming the clay, glazing, and firing. As a result, students will be exposed to a traditional art form. These activities will foster patience, creativity, and problem-solving while giving students a sense of pride in producing finished ceramic works they can share with family and fellow classmates. Glazes and ceramics projects will be integrated into the art curriculum each year, benefiting Sabal Palm artists for years to come.

Expected Outcomes

a) A major improvement in our art program will include a deeper understanding of the how and why we use glazes in ceramics. Art students will learn how color, chemistry, and creativity combine to produce lasting artwork. Students will also develop fine motor skills, focus, and perseverance as they carefully apply glaze and see the final outcome of the kiln results.
b) Outcomes will be measured through completed ceramic projects that demonstrate mastery of glazing techniques, as well as through student reflections, classroom gallery walks, and displays of artwork at school showcases. Another expected outcome is increased student engagement and excitement in art class, leading to higher confidence and creative expression.

Purpose of Funding

Funds will be used to purchase a variety of ceramic glazes that will provide students with a broad palette of colors and finishes. These supplies will allow students to complete their clay projects with professional-quality results. This will support the art curriculum at Sabal Palm and ensure that art students have access to a full ceramics experience.
