School libraries are often seen as the hub of the campus. It is important that this space
is inviting, engaging and a great place to visit. Furthermore, providing our student
visitors with incentives for reading is critical to enhancing reading time and for instilling a love of reading. Last year our students collectively earned over 25,000 Accelerated
Reader points. This amazing accomplishment creating excitement on campus, pushing
students to read more to add to their accrual of points. Reading incentive programs can
also help to build momentum for many children, especially reluctant readers, by acting
as a "spark" to overcome initial resistance.
The more students read, the more experience they will have with text. From decoding
to syllabicating and from learning vocabulary to building their comprehension, the
literacy skills are endless. When students become better readers, their self-esteem is
improved and so is their dedication to their studies. Through the earning of -tshirts as
incentives for reaching grade level milestones, our students can show off their success
and motivate their peers to do the same.

Project Description

Tracking student point accrual will allow me to identify students who meet set
goals. As students meet set goals, they will be rewarded with an incentive and
encouraged to meet their next goal. Our Title I students require an added level of inspiration and motivation. Incentive programs such as this project will, no doubt, help propel them to success and build strong and confident readers.

Expected Outcomes

As students improve their reading level, the most important change will be a
sense of self confidence and esteem. This is a win-win for them and our teachers who
work tirelessly to develop their literacy skills. Outcomes will be measured through the AR tracking program as well as data specific for tracking reading level improvement.

Purpose of Funding

Funds will be used to purchase reading incentives and presented to students as they are earned. As students wear their earned reading swag, they are able to build their own self-esteem while simultaneously encouraging others to meet their own goals.
