Project Description

A graphic novel uses images — often in a comic strip style — to tell a story. With pictures or illustrations and a lot less text, graphic novels help kids practice reading. They also can help kids build positive associations with books. When kids have trouble with reading, chances are they’re not thrilled when it comes time to sit down with a book. Traditional books can be hard to get through. The dense text or the number of pages can lead them to feel bored, frustrated, or even embarrassed. But kids still need to read — even more so if they struggle with it. When kids avoid books and don’t practice reading, it only gets harder to build reading skills.

Here are 5 reasons that support the importance of reading graphic novels:
1. Improves Visual Literacy and Vocabulary
2. Inspires Creativity
3. Enhances Social & Emotional Learning
4. Helps Kids with Learning Disabilities
5. Better Grasp on Literary Themes

Expected Outcomes

As a school, we are wanting to increase reading, writing, and vocabulary. The overall purpose of this project is to foster reading in middle school students that read at a variety of levels.

We will measure these outcomes in a variety of ways, such as: monthly projects, Socratic Seminars, book clubs, choice boards, and different forms of writing throughout the year.

Purpose of Funding

The budget will be used to purchase (Amazon/Barnes & Noble) the graphic novels for the use of all middle schoolers. These graphic novels will be used to increase reading to all levels of students!
