The overall purpose of this project is to provide access to more books on the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards eighth grade reading list for eighth grade students at Immokalee Middle School. Increasing access to these books will help improve these students' reading scores on the Florida reading tests: PM1, PM2, and PM3.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
The project will be based on the books that are on the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards eighth grade reading list. Eighth grade students in Intensive Reading, Regular English, and Advanced English will have the books to be able to do more book circles and reading projects that will help them prepare for the Florida reading tests. In addition, as a teacher, I will be able to share these books with other eighth grade teachers to help even more eighth grade students at Immokalee Middle School have increased access to these books to prepare for the Florida reading tests. I am asking for a class set of each of the books that are not available through the StudySync/McGraw Hill curriculum used in English Language Arts classes in Collier County Public Schools. While the majority of texts are available in full-length versions in Study Sync, there are exceptions. My goal is to make sure my students have access to full-length versions of all the texts on the Florida eighth grade reading list in preparation for the state reading tests.
Along with the reading list, the Florida Department of Education also provides a list of the reading standards that are tested for each book. My students not only will have access to the books to read, but they also will have the time to practice these reading standards with fidelity to the level of the rigor and difficult of each reading standard. As a result, my students will be able to improve their scores on the Florida reading tests. I will be able to measure these outcomes directly on the PM1, PM2, and PM3. PM standards for Progress Monitoring. Consequently, PM1 is given in September, PM2 in January, and PM3 in May. I will be able to track and measure my students' improvement on the reading standards through PM1, PM2, and PM3.
Upon receiving these grant funds, I will purchase a class set of 24 books for each of these 7 titles on the Florida eighth grade reading list. Once I have the class sets, I will be able to increase access to all the titles on the Florida eighth grade reading list to help my students improve their scores on the state reading tests (PM1, PM2, PM3). In the classroom, I will be able to differentiate my instruction in Intensive Reading, Regular English, and Advanced English through a variety of whole class instruction, small group work such as book circles, and individual instruction for remediation/reteaching and acceleration. All reading work will be based on the Florida B.E.S.T. reading standards that are already aligned with the Florida reading list by the Florida Department of Education. In addition, I hope to be able to share these books and class sets of books with other eighth grade English teachers at Immokalee Middle School to help them also improve their students' access to full-length versions of all the tests on the Florida eighth grade reading list.
