I have heard from parents repeatedly that their child does not want to be pulled out of a class to talk to the counselors. That makes it tough for us to communicate effectively, so we would like to sponsor a program where students come during lunch to confide, unload, vent, and ask questions. Mental Health is so very important in our middle school buildings, because those counselor submitted more Student Risk Assessments last year than any other level.

Goal(s)

I have heard from parents repeatedly that their child does not want to be pulled out of a class to talk to the counselors. That makes it tough for us to communicate effectively, so we would like to sponsor a program where students come during lunch to confide, unload, vent, and ask questions. Mental Health is so very important in our middle school buildings, because those counselor submitted more Student Risk Assessments last year than any other level.

Category

School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, PBIS, LIM, etc.

Project Description

Students will sign up to eat lunch with a counselor once a week. They will have the opportunity to speak about anything that concerns them - bullying, falling behind academically, not fitting in, lack of friends, etc. Counselors will establish a relationship with these students over lunch and then continue the relationship that was started.

Expected Outcomes

I hope that students will feel more like they are just talking to a trusted friend, than to a counselor who "needs" to help them. We will measure outcomes by the number of students who make appointments and who repeat the visits.

Purpose of Funding

I made the comment at a staff meeting, that I didn't want to do food treats this year. MANY teachers spoke up and said, "But that's what kids like." They are correct, and I see more motivation when students believe they are getting some type of special lunch or treat. Unity Day this year will be observed in our district and encourages all students to think ORANGE that day and to think up ways to show kindness and acceptance.
