The purpose of this project is for students to gain independent cooking skills. The goal is for adults with disabilities to become confident in the kitchen and prepare basic meals for themselves for independent living. My students are ages 18-22 years old. My goal is for all students to master cooking meals independently and safely. The goal is for students to carry this skill with them into their own homes so they do not need to depend on parents for their basic necessities.

Project Description

Students will be grouped in pairs. They will create a shopping list for their meal of choice. They will write the prices of the items they are purchasing and go to the grocery store and purchase those items. Students will prepare a meal with their partner by working as a team. All of my students have independent functioning goals as well as social goals. Being able to purchase items and cook a meal with their partner will help them learn basic independent functioning skills as well as social skills. Preparing students for success in adulthood through learning how to cook is a great life skill and will greatly benefit all of my students.

Expected Outcomes

Students will learn how to independently cook their own meals, which is a skill all of my students need to master. Because of this project being funded, my students will be able to cook for themselves, which is a skill necessary for life. Having the funds to purchase food items for students to cook will enhance their independent living skills. These outcomes will be measured through a checklist and teacher observation (students collected correct ingredients/materials, used kitchen equipment properly, use utensils safely, practiced kitchen safety while cooking, following directions, understanding time/temperature (stove, microwave, oven).

Purpose of Funding

These funds will be used for students to create their own balanced meal. Students will choose a meat, fruit or vegetable as well as a side. Students will cook all food items for their specific meal.
