The purpose of this project is to provide tier one flexible seating options to students in order to improve academic, social emotional, and behavior challenges. Flexible seating means providing students with multiple types of seating in the classroom instead of limiting them with traditional ones. It fosters movement and physical activity to engage in independent, collaborative and concentrated work.

This project will meet the needs of the students by acknowledging that every student is different and not all students are going to learn in a standard desk environment. Adaptability is provided with a range of comfortable seating styles that a student can select based on their concentration levels and/or earn as a positive incentive. A student may prefer a quiet place to work alone or a more participatory place to collaborate. This flexibility in seating enables the students to modify their learning environment to be fully engaged in learning.
Flexible seating options will allow the student to have control over the location and sitting method for his or her learning space when given the choice. This will enhance the student's motivation and responsibility. In addition, research shows that flexible seating options allow for improved concentration by providing a comfortable and engaging learning environment. Flexible seating serves as a necessary movement break to give sensory input to some students particularly those with sensory processing challenges, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Behavioral Disorders and others. The outcome measure will be observed by the student's increased independence, improved work quality and the ability to self-regulate while at school.
All of the items listed are flexible seating options for the classroom. These items will be used for students in Intensive Behavior Intervention Classrooms and General Education Classrooms as Tier 1 intervention as needed. Students will be able to choose and/or earn the flexible seating option.
