The purpose of this project is to help students with disabilities learn to write. First, a student must have the ability to hold the writing tool with a functional grasp. Then, the student needs to exert the right amount of pressure and control to make marks on the paper. Last, the student needs to be taught how to make lines, shapes, letters and numbers to draw and write. The learning goal and academic outcome is for students to start with the foundational skills to progress towards writing at their highest level of achievement.

Goal(s)

The purpose of this project is to help students with disabilities learn to write. First, a student must have the ability to hold the writing tool with a functional grasp. Last, the student needs to be taught how to make lines, shapes, letters and numbers to draw and write. The learning goal and academic outcome is for students to start with the foundational skills to progress towards writing at their highest level of achievement.

Category

School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.

Project Description

The project will start with having the student learn to hold a writing tool with a mature pencil grasp. Next, the student will learn to use a variety of writing surfaces to gain the strength, force, and control required to make marks on the paper. Then, the student will learn pre-writing strokes and progress towards writing letters and numbers on paper and white boards. These activities will meet the needs of the students based on their level of engagement starting with lines and progressing towards letters.

Expected Outcomes

Across many years of being an occupational therapist, parents have expressed their wants of having their child write his or her name. In order for this to be achieved, a student must start with the fundamentals of writing first and then move towards handwriting. The individual student improvements this project hopes to provide are facilitating a functional and mature grasp pattern on the writing tools, increased hand strength, and adequate control of hand movements. The outcome will be measured by a student making meaningful lines, shapes, letters or numbers. The ability for the student to write his or her name might be the ultimate goal for some students while writing sentences many be the ultimate goal for another. Students learn at different levels of instruction; therefore the most important part of this project is holding the writing tool to engage in writing activities.

Purpose of Funding

The pencil grips, white boards, easels, slant boards, writing workbooks, stencils, pencils, markers, and activity sets will allow for a multi-sensory approach to learning to write. All of these tools can be used to facilitate proper grasp on the pencil or marker to promote adequate pressure and control in order to become functional writers. Let's get ready to write!
