The purpose of this project is to give my English Language Learners at Shadowlawn the tools they need to succeed in the classroom. Shadowlawn is a Title I school with a primarily low-income, ELL population. Many of my students start school with very little formal education, and one of the greatest joys of teaching here is seeing them grow from those early struggles into confident readers who truly love learning.
This project will directly support their growth by addressing decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension gaps. The ScanMarker pens will give students immediate access to translations and read-aloud features, which will help them feel more confident in class. The ultimate goal is for my students to strengthen their fluency and comprehension so they can fully participate in grade-level lessons without feeling like they are falling behind.
Electronics - Headphones, charging cables, computer mice, etc.
The ScanMarker pens will be used in my classroom during reading, writing, and content lessons. Students will scan unfamiliar words to hear them read aloud, translate text into their home language, and capture notes for later review. The pens will be used during small group activities, independent practice, and whole-class instruction, giving students support whenever they need it.
At Shadowlawn, our students are hardworking, motivated, and eager to learn, even though many face challenges outside of school. These pens will meet their needs by giving them independence and access to grade-level material that might otherwise feel out of reach. As teachers, we want to make learning as accessible as possible, and this project provides the kind of tool that can open doors for our students and allow them to thrive.
With these pens, I expect to see students grow not just in their reading skills, but also in their confidence. Having a tool that allows them to read and understand without constant help will empower them to participate more fully in class discussions and activities. Instead of feeling like they are always trying to catch up, they will feel capable, included, and successful.
I will measure outcomes through reading fluency checks, vocabulary growth, and comprehension assessments, along with teacher observations and student feedback. The biggest change I hope to see is in how my students view themselves—as confident learners who enjoy reading and know they can succeed.
The grant funds will be used to purchase ScanMarker pens for my classroom. Each pen costs around $250, but they are durable, can be used for years, and will benefit a wide range of students. I plan to make them available throughout the day, especially for students who are new to the country and working hard to catch up. Having access to these pens will give them the confidence and support they need to succeed alongside their classmates
