The overall purpose of this project is to create engaging, immersive learning experiences for all third grade students through classroom room transformations. By temporarily redesigning the classroom to reflect a specific theme—such as Candyland, basketball, or medical—students are transported into a dynamic learning environment that ignites curiosity, encourages creativity, and increases motivation. This approach addresses the need for student engagement, differentiated instruction, and inclusive learning spaces that accommodate a variety of learning styles. It also fosters a sense of excitement and ownership over learning, which can be especially impactful for students who may struggle with traditional instruction methods.

This project supports the learning goal of increasing student engagement and deepening content understanding across multiple subject areas, including reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Room transformations are carefully aligned with academic standards and unit objectives, allowing students to apply grade-level concepts in an interactive and memorable way. Ultimately, the project aims to improve academic outcomes by fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and enthusiasm for learning, while ensuring that all third grade students can participate meaningfully regardless of their individual needs or abilities.

Project Description

As a grade level, we complete several room transformations to enhance student learning. We believe all students deserve the same opportunity, no matter whose class they are in. We love completing transformations that can be done cross curricular such as Candyland- which we use for a review prior to state testing. They are transported to Candyland where they have to "defeat" the Candy Queen to move on. Another one we enjoy is LPE Hospital, where students "dissect" stories to find the text structure or use the different multiplication properties to solve problems. Every March we complete March Madness and work to get kids excited about reading & math through friendly competition. Doing activities together allows all students to have the same experience!

Expected Outcomes

Room transformations will significantly improve student engagement, motivation, and overall participation in the classroom. By immersing students in themed, hands-on learning environments, the project will foster a sense of excitement and anticipation around academic content. As a result, students are more likely to be actively involved in lessons, show greater perseverance when facing challenging tasks, and retain information more effectively. We will measure the outcomes by tracking student engagement using observational data and engagement rubrics will be used to monitor student participation, focus, and enthusiasm during transformed lessons compared to traditional instruction.
