The purpose of this project is to obtain a copy of the Pragmatic Language Skills Inventory (PLSI), a norm-referenced, easy to administer assessment tool designed to evaluate students' social communication skills.
This tool gives us a better look at how students interact, not just in class, but socially and personally, too. This insight can help us spot kids who might be having a challenging time with social communication, so we can provide the right support. Since there aren’t many standardized assessments out there for pragmatic language skills, SLPs often rely mostly on observations and interviews. This tool adds another layer to that process, giving us additional helpful information and compares students to other children their age.

Project Description

Many students with social skill delays go undetected because their struggles may not be easily observable or it may be misinterpreted as behavioral issues. By using the PLSI, we can identify these students needs early and provide proactive support. This leads to improved student outcomes in social interaction, classroom participation, and emotional regulation.

Expected Outcomes

With the use of the Pragmatic Language Skills Inventory (PLSI), students with social communication challenges will be identified earlier and more accurately. As a result, they will receive targeted support and interventions to improve skills suck as turn-taking, understanding social cues, and participating in conversations. Progress will be measured through follow-up assessments, teacher observations, and data collection from social skills interventions.

Purpose of Funding

Grant funds will be used to purchase the Pragmatic Language Skills Inventory (PLSI) kit, including the manual, scoring forms, and related materials. These tools will allow the SLP to assess students’ social communication skills and identify those in need of support/intervention. This will directly support early identification and intervention for students struggling with peer, classroom, and social interactions.
