The purpose of this project is to expand hands-on learning opportunities in our high school engineering program by adding five VEX IQ System Bundles (2nd generation) to our classroom lab. Currently, limited robotics equipment restricts the number of students who can actively participate in building and coding activities, leading to unequal engagement and fewer opportunities for collaboration and applied problem-solving.
Students will develop technical skills in mechanical design, programming, and engineering problem-solving, while also building 21st-century skills such as teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. This project supports mastery of state STEM standards and prepares students for further education or careers in engineering, technology, and related fields.
Electronics - Headphones, charging cables, computer mice, etc.
Students will work in small teams to design, build, and program robots using the VEX IQ kits. Activities will include guided lessons on mechanical structures, coding logic, and sensor integration; iterative design challenges; and end-of-unit competitions where teams demonstrate their robots’ capabilities.
By providing enough kits for multiple teams to work at once, this project ensures every student has meaningful, hands-on experience. It fosters a collaborative learning environment where students apply classroom concepts to real-world scenarios, increasing engagement and skill retention. It also supports the school’s mission to prepare students for postsecondary STEM opportunities.
Students will gain stronger problem-solving abilities, improved collaboration skills, and greater confidence in applying engineering concepts. They will also develop proficiency in both mechanical and programming components of robotics, which will enhance readiness for advanced STEM coursework and career pathways.
Success will be measured by:
Completion of at least one fully functional robot by each student team by the end of the semester.
Performance in in-class robotics challenges and competitions.
Student self-assessments and reflections showing increased confidence and understanding of engineering concepts.
Teacher observations and rubric-based evaluations of teamwork, design process, and technical skills.
The grant funds will be used to purchase five VEX IQ System Bundles (2nd generation) for the high school engineering lab. Each kit includes all necessary structural pieces, motors, sensors, controllers, and programming components to build and operate a variety of functional robots. These funds will ensure that enough kits are available for multiple student teams to work concurrently, providing every student with equitable, hands-on access to design, build, and code their own robots. This purchase directly aligns with the submitted budget items and will expand the capacity of our engineering program to deliver engaging, project-based STEM learning experiences.
