The purpose of this project is to purchase additional musical instruments for my middle school praise band. The money will also be used to buy sound equipment that would allow two groups to practice in the same room at the same time without hearing each other, by allowing one group to practice using headphones and a mixer which would enable them to hear each other. However, in this set up the other students in class would not hear them practicing and therefore could be playing different music at the sametime.

Goal(s)

The purpose of this project is to purchase additional musical instruments for my middle school praise band. The money will also be used to buy sound equipment that would allow two groups to practice in the same room at the same time without hearing each other, by allowing one group to practice using headphones and a mixer which would enable them to hear each other. However, in this set up the other students in class would not hear them practicing and therefore could be playing different music at the sametime.

Project Description

In the 2024-2025 school year, I implemented a praise band class as an elective for my middle schoolers. We did this with limited instruments and resources, borrowing instruments from other schools to get the class off the ground. There was a 6th grade class as well as a 7/8th grade group. The 7/8th grade group was only 5 students which allowed us to form a band, self-named "Rockstars for Jesus." This group was able to prepare songs which enabled them to lead worship at school chapel once a month as well as play at the annual gala and both the winter and spring music concerts. The 6th grade class had 15 students, due to a lack of instruments, we were only able to really focus on acoustic guitar with a little bass guitar included on the acoustic guitar.

Participating in praise band enables students to not only learn lifelong musical and life skills but also gives them an opportunity to be leaders at school. Participating in a praise band in which a student is learning to play guitar, keyboard, drum set and bass guitar gives them musical skills that they can use outside of their K-12 school experience. Students may grow up to participate in their home church praise bands or simply use their guitar skills to play and sing at home with their families. Participating in any musical ensemble in which students work with others to create something positive, not only benefits them musically, but also makes them better members of society. It builds teamwork, cooperation, problem solving and listening skills. It gives middle schoolers a place in our individualistic society to be part of a positive, productive team of kids their own age that are working toward a common goal. Leading worship at our weekly school chapels, gives students a chance to be positive leaders and role models for not only their peers but also for all of our preschool and elementary students.

Expected Outcomes

The improvement in my praise band class through this funding will be two-fold. By purchasing another bass guitar and an electric drum set for class, more students will be able to stretch themselves musically by playing an instrument beyond the acoustic guitar on a regular basis.
Also, by purchasing sound equipment that allows one group to practice with headphones, it allows the formation of more than one "band" in the class. This gives students the ability to form smaller groups to prepare songs to lead chapel worship.
The measurement of this outcome will be very tangible, the ability to form more groups to lead worship will allow for more students to be a part of a chapel worship rotation as well as more hands-on practice during our class time. The excitement and growth the students will experience will be evident through their enthusiastic responses and the growth of the program through the years, enabled by this purchase.

Purpose of Funding
