The purpose of this project is to expand and diversify my middle school classroom library to better reflect the varied interests, identities, and reading levels of my students. I want to create a space where every student—regardless of their background or reading ability—can find a book that speaks to them. My current library lacks depth in certain genres and student-requested topics such as poetry, free verse, historical fiction, nonfiction, biographies, and STEM-related texts. By building a more inclusive and genre-rich collection, I can more effectively support student curiosity and choice.

This project directly supports my grade-level ELA standards by encouraging genre exploration and independent reading. As students study and analyze different genres across 6th–8th grade, the expanded library will allow them to continue engaging with genres they enjoy independently. This will promote deeper understanding of genre characteristics, foster critical thinking, and strengthen literacy skills. The project also aligns with our school-wide focus on increasing student engagement through personalized learning experiences.

Goal(s)

Project Description

This project will involve purchasing a diverse range of books across genres and formats to fill gaps in our classroom library. Genres will include poetry, novels in verse, historical fiction, biographies, nonfiction, and topics such as computer science and art. The books will be integrated into our daily classroom routines, including First Chapter Fridays, book-sharing circles, and peer recommendations. Students will help catalog and organize the new books, reinforcing their ownership of the reading space. They will also track books they’ve read and recommend titles to classmates, further building a collaborative reading culture.

My classroom library often serves as the primary access point for my middle schoolers to discover books. This project will meet students’ needs by providing high-interest, grade-appropriate titles that reflect their diverse interests and support differentiated reading. By creating a vibrant, student-centered library, I aim to make reading more accessible, more joyful, and more connected to their lived experiences.

Expected Outcomes

Students will increase the volume and frequency of independent reading, develop stronger preferences in genres and authors, and show greater enthusiasm for books. The expanded collection will empower students to make more informed reading choices and explore genres they may not otherwise encounter. Over time, I expect to see a positive shift in reading identity—students viewing themselves as capable, interested, and lifelong readers.

I will track independent reading through reading logs, book talks, and reading conferences. I’ll also monitor genre interest trends and book check-out data to assess which genres and formats are most engaging for students. In addition, student surveys and reflective writing about their reading preferences and habits will provide qualitative data on their engagement and growth. Success will be measured not only in the number of books read, but in the enthusiasm and confidence students show as readers.

Purpose of Funding

Grant funds will be used to purchase a curated selection of high-interest books across a wide range of genres and topics to expand my middle school classroom library. These include novels in verse, poetry collections, historical fiction, biographies, nonfiction, graphic novels, and books focused on student-requested topics such as technology, social justice, and computer science. The selected titles will align with the instructional goals of our ELA curriculum, supporting genre study units across grades 6–8 and encouraging independent reading that reinforces classroom learning. Each book added to the library will be labeled, cataloged, and tracked through our student-led checkout system, ensuring the materials are used regularly and meaningfully. The impact of these purchases will be maximized, as my classroom serves as the main reading hub for middle school students in our small school community.
