Last year, our IMS National Junior Honor Society began the Inclusive Marketplace for Students with the goal of helping all students have access to self-care products and school supplies. We provide free personal care items such as deodorant, shampoo, lotion, and other hygiene essentials for students in our community, as well as basic school supplies. Many of the families we serve face economic challenges, leaving students without access to basic necessities. This lack of resources not only impacts their personal confidence but can also negatively affect their school attendance and overall academic success.
School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.
Through the Marketplace, every student has the opportunity to select five items each month at no cost, empowering them to choose the products that best suit their needs. This approach not only provides practical support but also encourages independence and dignity, helping students feel more confident and prepared for success. Every month, students can place an order (online through Canvas) for the items they need (self-care and/or school supplies). Each morning, a group of NJHS students come to school early to compile, fill, and organize the orders. Then they deliver each bag to the students’ last class of the day so they can bring it right home. Some days we would have over 100 orders to fill! While it kept us super busy, the NJHS students enjoyed helping their peers get items they needed.
Our Student Marketplace is designed to meet these critical needs by providing all students access to essential personal care items. This initiative ensures students feel supported, valued, and equipped to thrive in their educational journey. Students should not need to worry about having toothpaste or pencils for class. By addressing basic needs, the Marketplace helps students focus on learning, build self-esteem, and foster a strong sense of belonging within the school community. Having created the Marketplace last year and having it up and running for 5 months, we had over 3,000 orders from students. It was a huge success! We can not wait to build upon this success this upcoming school year.
These grant funds will be used to purchase supplies for our Marketplace. We still have some supplies from last school year (deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, chap stick, notebooks, pens, rulers, glue sticks, erasers, etc.) and the items above are things we ran out of or were specifically requested by students.
