The goal of this project is to bring the Lakeshore Stand-Up Magnetic Design Center into our kindergarten classroom to support hands-on, interactive learning that meets the developmental needs of young students. This versatile, kid-friendly tool will provide an engaging and accessible space for collaborative learning, creative expression, and foundational skill-building. It addresses the need for a flexible learning station where students can participate in magnetic letter work, math games, drawing, and storytelling in a way that encourages movement and engagement.

This project supports several core academic outcomes for kindergarten students. The magnetic design center will strengthen literacy skills through letter recognition, phonemic awareness, spelling, and vocabulary building. It also supports early math development through number recognition, counting, and pattern-making. The hands-on nature of the center fosters fine motor growth as students manipulate magnetic pieces. Just as importantly, it encourages collaboration, communication, and shared learning experiences in a classroom environment designed to promote cooperation and self-confidence.

Project Description

The Lakeshore Stand-Up Magnetic Design Center will serve as a dedicated learning station in our classroom, used during literacy centers, math rotations, free choice, and small-group instruction. Students will use the easel for a wide range of academic activities, including building sight words with magnetic letters, solving number puzzles, drawing and labeling illustrations, and creating magnetic stories or STEM-based designs. Its two-sided magnetic board allows multiple students to work at once, promoting collaboration while making the most of our limited classroom space.

This project meets many important needs in our classroom. First, it increases student engagement through active, hands-on learning—essential for young children who thrive on movement and play. Second, it supports differentiated instruction by offering opportunities for students to work at their own level using tactile, visual materials. Third, it provides a much-needed, organized, and mobile learning space in a room that lacks permanent centers. Finally, the design center ensures that every student, regardless of ability, has access to high-quality, inclusive learning tools that support academic and developmental growth.

Expected Outcomes

With this magnetic center, students will show greater excitement and independence in learning activities. You’ll see stronger letter recognition, word-building, and math fluency as students interact with magnetic manipulatives daily. Fine motor skills and collaborative behaviors will improve through consistent, purposeful use of the station. Learning will become more visual, hands-on, and student-driven, increasing engagement and retention.
As a result of this project, students will become more engaged in learning and demonstrate improved academic performance, particularly in literacy and math. Regular use of the magnetic design center will help students strengthen their letter and number recognition, build words and sentences, explore math patterns, and practice drawing and storytelling. In addition, students will develop better fine motor skills and increase their ability to collaborate with peers. The center will become a valuable space for student choice and independence, making learning more enjoyable and meaningful.

To measure these outcomes, I will use a combination of teacher observations, student work samples, and informal assessments. I will observe how often students use the center, how engaged they are during activities, and how their skills improve over time. Student work completed at the center—such as magnetic word building or drawings—will serve as evidence of academic progress. I will also use classroom checklists to monitor growth in letter recognition, number fluency, and early writing skills. Finally, I’ll gather feedback from students about what they enjoy and learn from using the center to ensure it continues to meet their needs.

Purpose of Funding

Grant funds will be used to purchase the Lakeshore Stand-Up Magnetic Design Center (Item #LA583). This resource includes a double-sided magnetic surface, a dry-erase board, and built-in storage trays to keep materials organized and accessible for young learners. The design is durable and perfectly sized for kindergarten students, making it safe and easy for them to use independently or in small groups. This investment will provide a daily learning opportunity for every student in our class, helping to strengthen foundational literacy, math, and fine motor skills through engaging, hands-on experiences.
