Goal

Currently, there are two transition teachers at Golden Gate High School teaching the same curriculum. The goal is for my students to participate in money management strategies that will help them in their future budgeting for monthly expenses as well as for saving for special items.

What will be done with my students

Our transition students will learn about the three aspects of budgeting money: having money for our wants, our needs, and for our future. They will participate in a mock budgeting program and learn how to save money for our class trip! Our interns will earn mock money based on daily evaluations from their job training sites, their Social Security checks, and their site-based school businesses (Get It Fresh Produce, Grind Up Cafe', and G.A.T.E. Print Shop!) They will then create a monthly budget, pay monthly bills, and save money in their savings accounts. Our interns will chart their earnings and record on a visual thermometer to watch their savings grow!

Benefits to my students

Our interns are in the Greater Achievement Through Empowerment (G.A.T.E.) program. Each of our interns have earned their high school diplomas and have elected to defer their diploma. After graduation, they have returned to school for employability and independent living skills. Currently, we are at six community sites and receive daily evaluations based on their job performances and goals. We want to expand what we are doing to provide a real-life opportunity so our interns can reap the benefits of their hard work and to learn how to work and to save for "big" items that we really want!

Budget Narrative

When talking to my class about what big item they would like to save for this year, they decided that they would like to work and to save for a special trip. After listening to last year's interns talk about their special trip to Sea World, my transition students decided that they would like to work and to save money for Busch Gardens this year.
