Goal

My goal is to build leadership responsibilities in students through working and maintaining two gardens.

What will be done with my students

Students will be responsible for maintaining a butterfly garden and a "veggie" garden. Students will be responsible for watering both gardens in the mornings before the school bell rings. Students (under my direction) will also plant ALL the seedlings in the "veggie" garden and plant all the new flowers and milkweed plants in the butterfly garden! Students will also involve their 1st grade buddy class by showing them the caterpillars and chrysalises to help them understand the life cycle of a butterfly! 4th grade Students will explain will be able to explain the Life Cycle of a Butterfly with their 1st grade buddies. After we have harvested the vegetables we will than plant sunflowers in the "veggie" garden to observe seeds growing into flowers!

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit from the experience of growing vegetables and being able to eat them in class as a snack! My students will learning leadership by mentoring their 1st grade buddies. My students will also be able to experience a sense of pride in producing vegetables that they have grown and nurtured! These gardens will be a fun, interactive hands on learning experience not only for my 4th graders but a group of 1st graders as well! students will be doing ALL the planting of the seedlings and the flowers in the butterfly garden to help promote hands on learning and ownership and a sense of pride for the gardens.

Budget Narrative

The soil will be used in the vegetable garden to promote healthy growth of vegetable plants. The mulch will be used in the butterfly garden to help maintain a beautiful, weed free garden. The vegetable seedlings will be used to start the "veggie" garden and the flowers will be used to promote a happy environment for the butterflies and the caterpillars!
