Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 350

What a successful year for our SSYRA program! We had more participants this year than we have had since before Covid.  At first, there wasn't much interest, so I made two changes.

First, I encouraged teachers to read and talk about the books.

Many students wanted to read the same title that their teacher had read. The second change was that I allowed grades 3-5 to read the Jr. chapter books.  I found that it built their confidence by allowing them to start with books that were slightly below their grade level.  Many then moved on to the more challenging titles that were purchased with this grant.

The highlight of the year was the voting process.  The Supervisor of Elections office brought out their voting equipment, and each student in grades K-5 who had read at least 3 of this year's titles was able to vote.  For many, this was their first introduction to our voting process.  The students were so excited!

Next year, I will also include the Jr. chapter books.  My goal is for my students to read.  Any adjustments I can make that will encourage more students to participate is a win-win.

Original Grant Overview

Goal(s)

My goal is to grow my students' love of reading for pleasure by providing a variety of quality literature in a fun and engaging way . We will increase peer interaction by sharing with others, through conversation, and ideas and thoughts about books on the Sunshine State Young Readers List.
Also, students will experience firsthand the political voting process when choosing their favorite book and comparing our results with those of other participating schools around the state of Florida.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

Project Description

Classes will view a SSYRA premiere when the Media Specialist provides video book trailers on each of the 15 titles. Students will be encouraged to read as many of the books as they can throughout the 7 month period. They may write book reviews that will be shared with their peers. These may be viewed by students throughout the school. Students that read at least 3 titles, which includes at least 2 titles that will be read and discussed by the classroom teacher (this helps accommodate readers of all levels in the class), may vote in a mock election using real voting booths provided by the Supervisor of Elections. For every 3 books read, the student will be eligible for a reward provided by the Media Specialist. Those students who are successful in reading (or listening to) to all 15 titles will be invited to a special invitation only reading party.

Students will need to complete an Accelerated Reading comprehension quiz on each title they read. This will be supporting one of our schoolwide goals this year which is to increase independent reading and AR usage.

Expected Outcomes

Independent reading programs enhance students' knowledge and skills. The book trailers and awards will help motivate reluctant readers. Students will learn the importance and power of the voting process when they vote for their favorite SSYRA title. They will practice good citizenship skills when discussing the books with their peers and learn to appreciate the views of others about which is the best book.

Purpose of Funding

I am requesting a set of the 2025-26 SSYRA titles. These will be available in the media center for years to come.
