The goal is to provide students with interactive dry erase whiteboards to be used during math instruction! Whiteboards improve learning through increased participation and collaboration among students. They provide an alternate method of learning and practicing what they know. Whiteboards are a quick and cost-effective way of assessing students and they help in identifying students’ misconceptions as students use the whiteboards to work through their math problems. Whiteboards provide insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the class in understanding a particular concept or standard so that scaffolding can be provided, especially in the use of practicing math strategies for addition and subtraction within second grade!

Project Description

These whiteboards will help our second grade team determine readiness, review previous concepts, provide guided practice and targeted help, complete daily quick checks and provide small group, interactive lessons or one-on-one instruction. Using these whiteboards will not only encourage student engagement through another form of practice, but will also allow the use of Kagan Strategies where students can move around the room, show what they know, and pair up with peers during math instruction.

Whiteboards will provide the freedom of movement and thinking in or second grade classrooms to help further engage the learning of our young scholars!

Expected Outcomes

With the use of whiteboards, students will be able to learn more and be thoroughly engaged in the task at hand as whiteboards allow for information to be processed in an active, rather than passive, manner.
Whiteboards motivate students to try to answer questions they would not ordinarily answer because students can decide whether or not to share their answers, while still being called to show their work independently. This encourages students to try, since there is no consequence, intimidation, or embarrassment for wrong answers. They can choose to hide an answer or show it only to the teacher. If we try something, but it doesn’t work – we can “just erase it!”

When it comes to active engagement, I feel nothing beats dry-erase whiteboards. Student engagement is increased because dry erase markers and whiteboards are just more fun than pencil and paper. Students love writing on whiteboards!
