Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 380

The Reader Leader Club was a hit!  We ended up being a group of 30 students in grades 1-2 except for one avid 3rd grade reader. There were many students who were in the club last year and this year they convinced their friends to join.  We actually had to cut off enrollment to 30 students!  There were many more who chose us as their first choice for clubs!

I was delighted with how excited the students were to come to the club "meetings."  We started each session with a read aloud that went along with that month's theme and then followed it with an activity.

We had different themes with reading in the dark being the most popular.  We made Reader Leader buttons, read under the stars and had a "sleepover".

Each student received a custom T-shirt that we made ourselves and chose a book to take home!  Those books are on order and will be passed out during our last session of the year in May.

The club was so popular that I am going to continue it next year.  I love watching my students get excited about reading!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to create a Reader Leader club

Category

School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.

What will be done with my students

I will create a Leader In MeReader Leader Club consisting of up to 30 students grade K-2. During the club time students will have an opportunity to read independently, listen to picture book read alouds and learn about different book genres.

Each club meeting will have a different theme. Some examples are flashlight reading, sleepover (read with pillows and blankets), buddy reading etc

Every student will receive a custom reader leader shirt that they can wear on club days. These shirts will give the students a sense of pride in being one of the school's Reader Leaders.

At the end of the year each student will receive a book of their choosing that will be theirs to keep and add to their home library.

Benefits to my students

This club will be an additional opportunity for my avid readers to enjoy reading and sharing books in a leisurely and fun setting.

Budget Narrative

These supplies are enough to get us through an entire year of club meetings. The flashlights & projector will be able to be used again in the future and are not consumable.
