Our 2nd grade goal is to be fluent in addition and subtraction facts by the end of the year. My plan is to incorporate games during Fluency Workshop Days to enhance learning with hands-on experiences. I would also like to have magnetic materials for my whiteboard that correlate with manipulatives the students already have on hand for improved learning.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 17

I was blessed with a class that loved math and was eager to learn. The large scale money, numberline and 10 frames made it much easier for students to follow along with my lessons at the white board. It also eliminated repeated drawing, erasing and redrawing information, thus saving time.

Playing cards and dominos were used for several lessons throughout the year including games for place value, greater than or less than, playing "War" but adding, subtracting or multipling numbers. Kids liked the card and domino games so much I often sent  directions for games played in class so students could practice at home. Parents appreciated this too because it didn't feel like homework so kids were more likely to want to do math at home and they used items they already had at home.

I used the containers to create money banks for each student. The boxes allowed them to easily see the value of each coin and sort quickly so lessons moved faster. Kids called boxes their "cheat".

Final results...94% of students scored a 3, 4 or 5 on the Spring FAST Math test!! Thank you for making math fun!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our 2nd grade goal is to be fluent in addition and subtraction facts by the end of the year. My plan is to incorporate games during Fluency Workshop Days to enhance learning with hands-on experiences. I would also like to have magnetic materials for my whiteboard that correlate with manipulatives the students already have on hand for improved learning.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

There are a wealth of games that can be played with both dominoes and playing cards to enhance the learning experience. These activities can be differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. In addition, having XL magnetic number lines, 10 frames and hundreds charts on the whiteboard will make it easier for students to follow lessons and become familiar with number sense and addition/subtraction concepts during unit lessons.

Benefits to my students

CCPS has incorporated fluency workshop days into our curriculum calendar. Having the cards and dominoes will allow for collaborative work among students, enhance learning and give them foundational skills they can carry with them for future math success.
