Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 405

This grant was able to assist me and my coworkers to better meet the needs of our current junior/eleventh grade students.  We met with each of our junior student and worked with them on future plans and deadlines.  We spoke to them about using Xello from the State of Florida Department of Education. We assisted students in planning ahead to taking the ACT/CLT/SAT as basline scores and to then select the one they felt most comfortable with and prepare and set their Bright Futures goals in terms of scores, grade point average and community service/work hours.  Upon meeting with students we were able to assist those that were going to go directly into the workforce or to the military and link them to people who would be able to better assist students with their choices.  Students that showed an interest in college/university as a future were given packets which we reviewed with the testing date, scores needed, grade point averages and strategies on how to improve these.  We also provided them with a timeline and checklist for them to use this school year as juniors and to continue to use in the fall of 2025 as they get closer to applying to their desired colleges or universities.  The process of Common App was also discussed with the students and shown examples of what they are to expect and what they would need to do to comply with Common App and Florida Schools.  Upon meeting with the juniors, multiple meetings were set up with families and discussion ranged from parents not knowing what Bright Futures was to where do you think my child should attend.  It was challanging for the department to do but as a team we were able to move ahead and meet with our juniors that came in initially and those that we picked up as they transferred into Aubrey throughout the school year.  I have one family that has just transitioned in and we will be meeting in May due to the testing calendar that we currently are under and being part of AICE Cambridge at Aubrey, my schedule is a little tight at the moment.  New students that are transitioning next year and we are meeting with them to enroll and collect their course request for next year are also benefiting from this grant.  When we meet to enroll, I am able to pull out all of my materials and share with them information.  It is so helpful that some parents have let me know that they wish their previous school would have provided them with this type of information when their child was enrolled at the other school.  That is music to my ears and it means that this is one program that I will continue to implement yearly to help my students and their family understand how to navigate high school and make the transition to either a state college, university, the military or workforce upon their graduation.  The greatest thing is this all is that parent understand my limitations and that together we can work on helping make it the best possible program for them and at the same time I learn what may be helpful to other students and their families.

What will be done with my students

The counselor will meet with eleventh grade students to assist them in understanding the different paths available to them upon graduation. Post secondary journeys may include attending a university/college, enrolling in a trade school, entering the workforce or enlisting in the military. The initial meeting with a small group of students will consist of students receiving a copy of their transcripts, a post secondary terminology pamphlet for colleges/universities/trade schools/military, State of Florida Matrix, Bright Futures Scholarship information and multiple website links. These documents will assist students and their families in making critical decisions and educating them during their junior year in high school. Waiting until senior year is not an option, it is too late. Appointments will be available for families to follow up and meet one on one with the counselor.

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit by understanding the terminology which is used on the different colleges/universities/trade schools/military webpages. This will empower them to move through the sites and help them make decisions early on, knowing and understanding the requirements. This knowledge will allow students to move ahead, have their family involved and forge a path towards their life/career goals. This knowledge will also help them be on the top of their game and make them competitive.

Budget Narrative

The different colors of paper will be used to print out the information students will take home and share with their families. Having done this our first year at Aubrey Rogers, the majority of the parents request the physical documents versus having them accessible online.
