Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 80

Our fourth graders are so appreciative and fortunate to have had the opportunity to be able to participate in hands-on science activities, investigations, and experiments throughout our units.  This generous donation has allowed our students the opportunity to be able to interact with Zoomy handheld digital microscopes to explore different aspects of science such as the owl pellet and flower dissection along with rocks and minerals. This opportunity to get up close and personal further engaged them and made these experiences even more memorable. We were able to really see in detail and able to draw our findings in our notebooks to reference. The owl pellets allowed us dive deeper into food chains and make a lasting impression of predator-prey interactions. We really rocked our rock unit with all the rocks and minerals provided. We were able to explore weathering with the rock tumbler and students were able to keep a keepsake with them to refer to how the tumbling affected their rock. We used streak plates to define properties of rocks and explore with the rocks the differences with the streaks. The magnets also allowed us to explore the properties of magnetism and each student had an opportunity to see firsthand how attraction and repulsion occur. All of these experiences have allowed my students to have firsthand experiences to make a lasting impression and understanding of these concepts. It would not have been possible without your donation.

Thank you so much for your wonderful donation to our fourth-grade classes!  This has helped not only Ms. Fitz's fourth grade class, but all of the fourth-grade classes at Golden Terrace Elementary!  We can't thank you enough! :)

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like to provide my students with engaging and real-world hands on activities that focus on a variety of fourth grade science topics including; rocks and minerals, weathering and erosion, food chains and food webs, magnetism, conductors and observational skills.

What will be done with my students

My students will be actively learning about food chains and food webs by dissecting "mystery pellets". Students will collaborate with their lab group to dissect the owl pellets. They will use the bone identification chart to identify what their owl ate.

My students will investigate all types of rocks and minerals in order to learn about their properties. We will be able to provide various rock types with with this grant to use in our classroom tumbler. My students will be able to observe the rocks prior and after they are weathered down by the tumbler. Students will be able to keep their rock as a science memory of the unit.

Students will investigate properties of magnets, such as attraction and repulsion. They will use the two poles on the magnets to test out how they attract or repulse each other depending on the orientation of the poles.

Students will be able to use a digital microscope that will magnify objects by projecting them onto the computer at 43x the size. This will allow students to view objects in a way that a handheld microscope cannot do, resulting in better observations of science objects.

Benefits to my students

All fourth grade students will benefit at our school by having zoomies to investigate and observe different science labs. The hands-on materials will allow students to interact with materials instead of having to read about them in a book, allowing them to make connections to science concepts in a more engaging way. These items will also help students learn concepts through observations that will be tested on their fifth grade science state test.

Budget Narrative

- 30 large owl pellets would be enough for 10 per class (1 per pair or group of 3 students)
- 4 Zoomies costing 34.99 each
-Various rocks to tumble, grit, and a book for the lesson
-80 Magnets allows each pair of students to have two magnets
-5 Energy Sticks allows 1 energy stick per group
