Goal

Our goal is to obtain science resources for our students that are aligned to our state standards through hands on activities with fun and rigorous games that are research based.

What will be done with my students

Students need multiple exposures to concepts throughout the school year to ensure mastery of learning targets or objectives. Spiral reviews can be a game changer for any classroom as it assists with vocabulary and keeps content fresh all year long. However, 5th graders are faced with the end of the year state assessment that covers standards taught not only in their current grade level, but content they acquired over the span of their education in grades K-5!
During our D.I. (differentiated instructional) block groups of students will be meeting in their enrichment groups and participating in specific science-based learning activities to reteach/review prior science standards. Mini reading passages with key vocabulary will help to reintroduce previous learned concepts and give a string board for students to produce interactive journaling to build depth of knowledge, mini hands-on exploration labs will then be completed that align with the standard they are working on, and at the end of each spiral review students will challenge one another using board and card game reviews.

Benefits to my students

These resources will aid in students deepening the core science skills necessary to master the state standards and give them an opportunity to build confidence in those concepts they need to have retaught. Students will be immersed in interactive activities through visual and kinesthetic learning. The use of sorting strategies, hands-on labs, drawing concepts through simple art, vocabulary building through games, reading strategies through graphic organizers, and opportunities for students to teach one another.
