International Cafe has brought together many students who are new to our country. My goal is for students transitioning into a new culture, new language and new family dynamics to have some time and space to process their many experiences. Having a journal will help students document their experiences, express their emotions and plan out their academic goals.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 35

Navigating a new culture can be very daunting. The journals help guide our newcomers through unfamiliar customs, strange foods, and bewildering social norms. They reflect on topics that are sometimes hard to process: homesickness, identity, and the delicate balance between holding on and letting go. Students also share information about themselves and make connections with other students who share similar ideas. At the end of the year, the students will have a compilation of topics and ideas they experienced in the International Café.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

International Cafe has brought together many students who are new to our country. My goal is for students transitioning into a new culture, new language and new family dynamics to have some time and space to process their many experiences. Having a journal will help students document their experiences, express their emotions and plan out their academic goals.

What will be done with my students

As part of their acculturation, I would love to provide students with a personal journal. Some topics we will visit during Intenational Cafe are similarities and differences between schools, holiday/seasonal vocabulary and traditions, planning both academic and personal goals, just to name a few.

Benefits to my students

Student journals will help them form connections, learn new holiday vocabulary and create visuals to help them attain their goals. Students are excited to about learning English and experiencing a new culture. Writing journals will give students an opportunity to express their thoughts and will greatly benefit their academic endeavors.

Budget Narrative

One of our school-wide goals is to acknowledge every student. Giving students a space to write their thoughts, hopes and dreams will help students feel validated and it will help them integrate into their new school community.
