Goal

The objective is to provide a positive reward system for reading through our Accelerated Reading Program. We encourage reading at all grade levels, but specifically with grades 1st - 5th, we would like to reward those students with a monthly incentive called a book charm.

What will be done with my students

The students at our school receive a monthly reading goal based on their individual reading level. Students take the Accelerated Reading Star Test, which provides them with a leveled reading range for the month. The students are able to check out books from our classroom libraries as well as read books from home. As they work towards their reading goal for the month, they are encouraged by their teacher and peers! At the end of the month, the students who achieve their reading goal will be given a book charm. Students may earn up to 10 charms based on 10 months of reading at school. The charms will then be added to a necklace chain and they can wear those around school.

Benefits to my students

Our mission is for the book charms to be an incentive for students to work towards their monthly goal. Our school promotes reading fluency and vocabulary building through the use of our Accelerated Reading Program and curriculum-based content.
When students read the books they choose, they have that inner motivation to explore reading topics both fiction and non-fiction, depending on their interest. This reading incentive program utilizing the book charms will impact 143 students at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School.

Budget Narrative

Three orders from Amazon.com will need to be purchased to cover 143 students with the book charms. Each order contains enough for 50 students. There will be a small leftover amount, which can be used for new students who may enter during the school year.
