Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 203

Pelican Marsh Art students in grades 4 and 5 had the opportunity to work in various sculptural materials including paris craft, soft sculpture and wire sculpture. There are 102 students in 4th grade and 101 students in 5th grade. A total of 203 students benefited from this grant opportunity. This grant was able to purchase art making supplies that provided student artists with art making opportunities that they would not have had otherwise. The school budget does not allow for the purchase of “extra” art making supplies.

The 4th grade students created an armature out of aluminum foil and then covered it with paris craft. Once the sculpture was dry, they then painted it with acrylic paint and decorated it with found objects. The second sculpture project the students worked on was soft sculpture. The art students created a pattern for their soft sculpture, cut the fabric, sewed it together and decorated it with other fabrics and googly eyes. This was then followed by a fabric collage project based on works that I saw at the Baker Museum. The exhibition at the Baker Museum featured fabric pieces that looked similar to collage, so I developed a lesson around that so the children could have an additional fiber art lesson that directly related to their soft sculpture project. This became an extended learning experience for the 4th grade PME art students.

Art students in grade 5 created sculptural paris craft masks. The masks were made, painted and then decorated. The Pelican Marsh art students in Grade 5 then created two wire sculptures. The first wire sculpture that they made was a turtle and the second was a fish. The students had to learn to successfully attach the wire pieces together and then to bend the wire into the desired forms. This proved to be quite a challenge for them since they had never worked with wire before.

Art students at Pelican Marsh are very creative and diligent workers. Exposure to new (for them) sculptural materials expanded their understanding of sculpture. Additionally, the opportunity to work in these new materials (for them) provided them learning opportunities which support the Florida State and National Art Learning Standards.

What will be done with my students

Students in grades 4 and 5 will look at sculptures from various periods in history and cultures. The art students will have the opportunity to work in various sculptural materials including paris craft, and wire sculpture. Students will see demonstrations on how to make an armature and cover it will paris craft. Art students will also see demonstrations on building a wire sculpture. students will plan and then construct their own wire sculpture. Fourth and fifth grade art students will plan and create their own individual sculptural works.
