Impact to My Classroom

The Safety Patrol at Shadowlawn Elementary is comprised of 30 fourth and fifth graders who expressed interest in the program and were recommended due to consistently demonstrating our three school-wide expectations: be respectful, responsible, be ready to learn. Having this program in place at our Elementary School holds our students to a high standard, not only to qualify for participation, but to hold a position throughout the year as well. Students this 2023-2024 school year were fortunate enough to have an entire new set of belts in order to be recognized throughout the campus as role-models by their peers as they performed their safety patrol functions. The list of job positions on the campus in quite extensive including raising and lower the America Flag, assisting with recess equipment placement in the morning and afternoon, monitoring Kindergarten hallways as well as cafe during the morning, and many others. These positions instill a sense of pride and responsibility within our students and lead to the development of self-esteem and self-efficacy. Furthermore, pins which were able to be purchased via funds granted by the Champions for Learning grant provided an extra flare for students who were awarded with our “Safety Patrol of the Month” award.
I am excited for our incoming group of third graders who were recently selected to become Safety Patrol, and our school now has the equipment to pass down from our graduating 5th graders in order to begin our current third graders on their journey. I’m truly grateful to have all of the support to make programs such as this not only possible, but a great success as well.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The Safety Patrol program at Shadowlawn Elementary is designed to not only provide opportunities for secondary students on the elementary campus a chance to fulfill a leadership position, but provides a great deal of assistance to the campus throughout various periods of the day as well. Students are able to learn the value of responsibility, hard work, and contribution, feeling what it is like to serve a community which they are a part of.

What will be done with my students

Student serve in a wide variety of roles, training in each, and serving as role-models for other students. Positive behavior is encouraged along the way as consistent exemplary behavior is a requirement for continuation within the program. Student learn discipline, being required to report on time daily and preform structured tasks. Many positions require the monitoring and encouragement of positive behavior among the student body during "holding area" times, and various other positions develop a sense of respect for school property by assisting with daily placement and storage of items, including the American flag as well as recess equipment

Benefits to my students

The functions they serve as Safety Patrols helps certain function run smoothly (campus equipment organization, American/State flag management etc.) but it helps keep students safe and traffic flow moving smoothly as well.

Budget Narrative

The needs for the project are quite simple. We are currently in need of some additional belts as well as badges for students primarily. Safety Patrol of the Month certificates would also be an excellent addition to the program. These simple items alone provide an enormous benefit to the program.
The needs were identified based upon experience running the program throughout the past year as well as by assessing current supplies on campus.
