Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 55

The Champions for Learning Grant for "A Garden Invest-MINT to BAY-LEAF In!" allowed the littlest learners at Seacrest Country Day School to connect with nature and each other. The Preschoolers and Prekindergarteners explored plant life cycles and practiced cooperating as they cared and shared in the garden. In addition to practicing science skills, the students became "5-Star" chefs preparing salads with the herbs grown in the garden. Thank you, Champions for Learning, for your "invest-mint" in this beautiful and bountiful project!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This grant request aims to provide gardening supplies: potting soil, herb seedlings, and gardening tools to create an herb garden for Preschool and Prekindergarten children to plant and tend as young gardeners and caretakers of the earth.

What will be done with my students

The Preschool and Prekindergarten outdoor play area includes raised garden boxes and a small garden plot. These garden spaces would make lovely herb gardens. Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, these young learners can experience the life cycle of outdoor gardens by planting, tending, and harvesting herbs. The hands-on, multi-sensory experience of gardening provides children with an increased understanding of botany, conservation, and personal responsibility. Additionally, the children enjoy sharing their herb bounty with friends, family, and Seacrest Community members by using the fresh-grown herbs in vinegars and seasonings.

Benefits to my students

*Participate in multi-sensory explorations
*Investigate science and the scientific process of plant life cycles
*Create social and collaborative relationships through gardening teamwork with peers
*Use time outdoors to improve physical and mental well-being
*Develop an understanding of good earth stewardship
*Make "real world" connections
