Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 84

This recorder project has been a major success. The students were unbelievably excited to get their recorders and start learning. We are eagerly anticipating our upcoming showcase and across the 5 classes of 3rd graders many of them are mastering the notes and songs we have learned. After the concert students over the summer our students will get to take their Essential Elements book home to continue their instrument learning. I have many students extremely excited to continue their journey on the recorder over the summer at home. Thank you so much for the gernerous donation as it has greatly impacted these kids lives with an opportunity they otherwise would not have had.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have the Lely Elementary 3rd grade students learn to read music through recorder while also learning how to care for and perform in concert with their instruments.

What will be done with my students

Students will get to choose their color of instrument. They will then take part in a 3 month journey that will cover the basics of reading music including learning: note names, rhythm, etc and reaching to more advanced topics like harmony, rounds, tempo, dynamics, etc. We will push the level of learning this year through friendly competition in class. Our school theme this year is Game On and so we will transform our classroom to teach good sportsmanship and drive the passion for learning. The students will get to perform for their peers and parents on stage towards the end of the year to showcase their abilities.

Benefits to my students

Learning recorder through the Essential Elements book will teach the students not only the ability to read music and ready them for a continuation into middle and high school band, but also teaches them many functional skills to use outside of music such as rehearsal/training discipline, multitasking, coordination, good sportsmanship through competition and teamwork. The students are very excited to be able to play instruments in music class; third graders come in on the first day of school asking if they are going to get to play recorder this year. At the end of the year, any students that would like to continue their own education in music and even other instruments can do so with the Essential Elements Method books. I use the Essential Elements series because they have a book for every instrument and also more complex books for intermediate and advanced musicians, allowing the students to take the core of knowledge they learned in music class and apply it to their personal interests. As an additional benefit, the fourth grade students get to perform on the recorder alongside the Philharmonic orchestra as a field trip to Artis-Naples

Budget Narrative

These are well reviewed, good quality, two piece plastic recorders. They are small enough to fit comfortably in children's hands and easy enough to get a good tone for beginners. They come with Hal Leonard's widely known Essential Elements Method book by authors: Charles Menghini, Kaye Clements and Paul Lavender.
