Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 525

When our students see all of the new books that we were able to get through our Champions for Learning grant, their eyes light up. Our kids are voracious readers and they love to see new reading material in the media center. Every year we participate in the Sunshine State Reading Program so the kids look forward to the SSYRA picks each fall.

We know that reading is such an important skill for kids to learn. It is the foundation for all learning. The more quality reading material we can expose kids to, the better readers they will become. Our media center is a place where kids love to be. They love the environment and they love THE BOOKS! Champions for Learning has helped us boost our collection while engaging more and more kids in reading. We appreciate Champions for Learning and all of the supporters of public education in Collier County. We could not have the quality of education in CCPS without organizations like Champions and involved citizens.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our mission at the Lely Elementary Media Center is to get quality reading material into the hands of every student. Our kids are ravenous readers and we strive to get books to grow their minds.

What will be done with my students

Every year, we promote the Sunshine State Reading Program. Kids at all elementary grade levels read as many of the Sunshine State Books as they can. At the end of the school year, the Collier County Supervisor of Elections brings real voting booths to our media center for our students to vote for their favorite Sunshine State Books.

This grant is for funds to purchase all of the Sunshine State Books for both Kindergarten through second grade as well as third grade through fifth grade.

Benefits to my students

We know that kids learn so much from reading. They develop their minds, their creativity, their empathy, and their knowledge by reading quality reading material. The books chosen by the Florida Association of Media in Education are first-rate, quality books that speak to our student population. They will beautifully crafted stories and learn about the world around them. We know that reading fosters intelligence in students. Being a Title 1 school, we have greater needs than most. Helping our kids with quality books will pay off exponentially.

Budget Narrative

These books are for both Kindergarten through second grade Sunshine State Books as well as third through fifth grade Sunshine State Books. With all of these books and for less than a dollar per student, we will serve the needs of all 495 students at Lely Elementary School.
