Goal

Students will read quality literature that is rich in vocabulary in order to build knowledge and oral language skills. Students will discuss and write about the stories in small groups led by the classroom teacher.

What will be done with my students

In small groups, teachers will guide students to access background knowledge, introduce vocabulary, and focus on semantics, syntax and figurative language. Students will learn and apply comprehension skills in order to make meaning of the texts.

Benefits to my students

First grade students who can read with automaticity need instruction with high quality literature in order to apply the reading skills they have learned to a new text. Specifically, they will learn new vocabulary and comprehension skills which they will apply to make meaning of the text. First graders work hard at learning new reading skills. They are excited to apply what they know about reading to new books and gain new knowledge.

Budget Narrative

First grade students will benefit from access to trade books rich in vocabulary in order to support language comprehension skills in the classroom.
