Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 460

The use of running bling at Tommie Barfield Elementary has made a huge impact on the increase in physical activity with our students. Students love receiving new necklaces every year and collecting the bling throughout the year. Students have the opportunity to run once a week as a warm up in PE class, and then our 2nd thru 5th graders have the opporutnity to join run club and run an additional 2 days per week before school. We use a program, Marathon Kids, to scan and track every lap that students run thoughout the school year. Students receive their running bling once a month based on how many miles they have competed throughout the month. Not only has the running bling created a fun incentive for our young runners, but it has helped to develop a passion for running outside of school. The excitement of running has helped our students focus better in the classroom, built self-confidence, created non-academic goal setting opportunities and have students excited to show up for school on their running days.

Thank for you for supporting this program and helping to keep the momentum going with building a love and passion for running and physical health.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To purchase additional running bling and necklaces for students in order to continue our motivational running program at TBE.

What will be done with my students

In the 2020-21 school year we began using “running bling” to help motivate our students to run both in PE class and during run club. We use a running app to track student's laps and distance while running throughout the school year. Students receive the running bling based on the number of miles/lap they complete and have developed a strong interest in the program due to this reward system. They wear their bling on the necklaces and are so proud of their accomplishments while also increasing their physical health. This grant opportunity would allow us to purchase additional running bling and age-appropriate necklaces for students to wear their bling.

Benefits to my students

This running program has increased the number of students who have found a passion in running and developed a sense of motivation for others. Students have the opportunity to run both before school in the run club program and once a week during physical education class. Students are able to improve their cardiovascular endurance and overall fitness level with the passion and motivation of the running program here at Tommie Barfield Elementary.

Budget Narrative

tudents keep their running bling and necklaces each year. They wear them proudly, but we do have to resupply the stock each year, so this purchase will ensure that we have enough necklaces and milestones for students throughout the 2023-24 school year.
All of the items will be purchased through www.fitnessfinders.net
