Goal

To provide all first grade students with a personal dictionary that includes 500 high-frequency sight words and blank lines for new words chosen by the student or teacher. 

What will be done with my students

The personal dictionaries provide spelling and writing support for early readers and writers. The format facilitates differentiated instruction by enabling students at different levels to compile meaningful and appropriate words using the same books. Additional words can be selected from phonics lessons, spelling lists, literature, word walls, science and social studies. A section in the back of the book provides pages for color and number words, the names of friends and family members, and other categories of words. Alphabetization, spelling, word recognition, vocabulary development and dictionary skills will be reinforced daily though the use of these personal dictionaries.  

Benefits to my students

I am resubmitting this grant for my current first grade students. This was one of the BEST grants I received! These books are so beneficial to the students. They used them every day in all subject areas. The books were collected at the end of last year and sent to second grade so that the students can continue to use them for a second year to write. The image included in this grant is a picture of my last year’s students using the books. The process of adding words that are relevant and personally meaningful engages students in learning and remembering. It also facilitates differentiated instruction by enabling each student to add words appropriate for that student. Students then refer to their personal dictionaries when writing, so the words’ correct spelling is used and reinforced. As students expand the collection of words they recognize and spell correctly, they gain confidence and a sense of ownership of our language.

This budget is for 120 Words I use When I Write books. They will be purchased from Christianbooks.
