Third grade multiplication, division and fraction standards are very challenging. My goal with this grant is to make these concepts much easier by using Lego bricks to represent multiplication arrays as well as unit fractions.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 24

This has helped my students so much with understanding fractions. Ordering fractions from least to greatest or greatest to least, was the most difficult concept for them. Using these Legos, I was able to push them even further with understanding fractions such as equivalence and reducing. I had THEM create ways to use the legos with fractions. They explored, problem solved, work together and then created great tools for themselves and their classmates. My math students are beyond prepared for fourth grade math now!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Third grade multiplication, division and fraction standards are very challenging. My goal with this grant is to make these concepts much easier by using Lego bricks to represent multiplication arrays as well as unit fractions.

What will be done with my students

This will be a hands on way to teach both multiplication as well as fractions. Basic division can even be taught with these bricks. Students will use the bricks to show arrays or fractions as they are introduced. As the standards progress, the students will use the bricks to multiply, divide, add fractions, order fractions and even show equivalent fractions. All children love manipulating Lego bricks. My students will use these bricks to enhance their learning and understanding of difficult math concepts.

Benefits to my students

This grant will create excited while learning math. Many students do not like math, but if it is enjoyable, they will love it and in the process learn. This grant will help with understanding some very difficult math standards.

Budget Narrative

3 kits will be purchased in order to have a variety of bricks for all to use.
