Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 2000

The Costume 101 kits were provided to every middle and high school across the district. The Theatre Club at Lorenzo Walker Technical High School received one as well. With these tools, teachers and students can learn the process of designing costumes and have the basic tools for doing so. Since most of our schools produce at least one production a year, these kits are immediately useful. One teacher was so motivated by this project that she applied for and was awarded her own Champions for Learning grant. She also applied for a much larger grant through a national theatrical organization. Although the public announcement has not been made, she and her students are recipients of nearly $5000. Through that grant she is expanding her efforts in costume design. She will receive dress forms, sewing machines, other costume materials, and enough fabric for every student to make a costume. Another high school teacher, after receiving the kit, brought sewing machines into her room and had her mother, a master seamstress, come work with the students. All those students started with the basics: sewing a button and making a seam. The students in her classes will also be designing and building the costumes needed for their spring production. I love that the idea behind this simple kit has grown in this capacity. Students are not only learning about the costume design process, but they are also gaining valuable life skills.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide the theatre programs at each of the middle and high schools (18 schools) with resources and supplies for learning the costuming process and for creating a costuming team. Costuming is a crucial aspect of any stage play or musical, and these materials will support that technical element of theatrical productions.

What will be done with my students

Using these Costuming 101 kits, teachers and students will be provided with hands-on training that demonstrates the costuming process.
1. Costume Design
2. Costume Measurements
3. Costume Book - Components
4. Costume Gathering/Budgeting
5. Costume Organizing/Tagging
6. Costume Repair
7. Costume Cleaning
8. Costume Storaage

Benefits to my students

Teachers and students will engage in the creative process of costume creation. Using a script and their imaginations, they will be able to create, assemble, and maintain costumes for any given production. Over the course of a year, theatre classes and drama clubs will be able to build costume collections for their own school-based productions which should grow with their programs. Students will also learn valuable skills such as character analysis, color theory, historic research, budgeting, and time management. Other life skills that students will learn include laundry, ironing/steaming, basic mending, and proper use of a hanger. Working with costumes is often a wonderful, creative outlet for students who enjoy fashion, film, and theatre.

Budget Narrative

1. The 3-in binders will serve as the Costume Binder for a given production. This binder will include the measurement for each actor, the specifc designs by actor/scene, the costume budget, costume collection plan for each piece.
2. The sewing kit include the basics for maintaining costumes - thread, needles, scissors, etc. Students will be able to utilize the kit throughout the costuming process.
3. Measuring tapes are essential for taking accurate measurements of actors. This two-pack set will make the process move more quickly.
4. The page marker tabs are needed to identify each actor's collection withing the binder: measurements, design, pieces, budget items, and potential repairs.
5. The tags are used to identify the contents of each costume hanger. They are labeld by actor and scene. Depending on the production, one actor could have several hangers - each one designating a costume change.
6. This 72 page book includes sewing basics and elements of historic costumes. It includes machine and hand sewing information.
7. The storage case is the two compartment box that will hold all of the other items. Each case is plastic with carry handles. This makes it portable for the classroom, stage, and shopping.
Nineteen of each item (except costume tags) have been included so that I, as the teacher trainer, will have materials for classroom & teacher instruction. I will be taking my kit from school to school, supporting classroom instruction and production design.
