Goal

My goal is to develop critical thinking in my students that will serve them for years to come. Through using chess, checkers, and marble runs, my incoming students will have the opportunity daily to practice and develop cognitive skills that come with planning ahead, executing, and revising their ideas and moves. 

What will be done with my students

My students will be taught first how to play checkers. We will learn the purpose of playing the game is to develop our critical thinking, practice turn taking and patience, and also to have fun and build our classroom community. After the second quarter of school, we will progress to chess, which adds layer of complexity. Students will be partnered with others that they may or may not naturally gravitate towards. By allowing them time each day and supporting their critical thinking and planning ahead, I hope to see wonderful gains in math, language, and social skills. The marble runs will encourage creativity and teamwork and will be offered as a choice several times a week, either before school, during 'lunch bunch', or after completing classwork. Children learn a lot through hands-on play. 

Benefits to my students

The students will benefit cognitively by learning the two games and improving their strategies. With the marble-runs as well, students practice and develop their social skills, critical thinking, and language. I want to encourage my students that practice does lead to greater success, we work with all kinds of people, and we can grow both our academic abilities and our manners and social interactions with each other. 

Budget Narrative

The budget is to purchase 11 sets of No Stress Chess and 11 sets of large Checkers from Amazon. Also, I am requesting 5 marble sets for our classroom. Thank you so much!
