Original Grant Overview

Goal

Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students (and/or family event) will continue to design, create, and install colorful rocks, giving them personal designs and inspirational messages. The rock garden will be installed in a public space on the school’s campus. The rock garden will be part of the schools “beatification initiative” that will demonstrate how art connects us to each other, the community, and the world! This year the school would like to continue the aesthetics of the garden by incorporating addition garden art work and adding plants and mulch.

What will be done with my students

Students (and families) will learn the design processes that artists use when creating public art. The students and families have decided and prepare the perfect place for the garden installation. Then will continue designing and paint a rock with a positive/motivational message that will be installed on the school campus. Last year students and families worked on the installation space and thought about the impact on the viewing audience. The students and families will continue incorporating “Connect for Success” theme to spread Social, Emotional Learning, and (SEL) messages. Once the students’ family’s rocks were/are painted the students’ families will find the perfect spot in the garden where they will plant the painted rocks-- in public art installation. Lastly, the artists will enjoy and experience the power of their contributions of art to their community.

Benefits to my students

Students and families will learn about careers that are available for creative people including public art. They will continue to learn how as artists they can create installations that will translate into publicly displayed works of art. Students will understand and experience the power of publicly displayed art by seeing first-hand how their creations affect others. Oakridge Middle School family will be able to enjoy the rock garden as a permanent art installation and enjoy the tiles for many years of come.
