Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

Our students at Everglades City School were introduced to a whole new experience this year.  We got to start learning  to play the piano!  None of the students had any previous experience playing the piano.  All of our students in Kindergarten thru 5th Grade were begun using simple basics of finding combinations of 2 and 3 black keys, then middle C and all of the other C's, and then some other of the white keys.  For our youngest students that was about as far as they could get, but the good part is that gives them a good foundation for when we start again next year.  The 1st graders were able to play some simple songs using finger number patterns.  The 2nd and 3rd graders began to play melodies in our method book using finger numbers.  Our most advanced students were able to begin to read actual music notation and play melodies with both the left hand and right hand.  I think this first year was very positive and those students who played this year will definitely have a good jump on next year.  Our 5th graders, although they only got one year of playing the piano, I hope that it was enough to help solidify their musical foundation and something they will want to return to again in the future.  This was probably the favorite musical experience for all of our students at EVG this year!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would love for all of the students in grade K thru 5 at Everglades City School to learn to play the keyboard.

What will be done with my students

All of the students will be introduced to playing the piano and taught at the appropriate grade level. This program will become a part of their music education experience each year and will build on their success and achievements going forward. They will learn the basics of getting comfortable with the keyboard and eventually advance to using both hands and reading simple notation.

Benefits to my students

Learning to play the piano will give the students a better musical foundation for their future musical experiences. Unfortunately, the last year for music instruction at Everglades City School is 5th grade. I feel playing the piano is especially important for these students and their intellectual development. Research has proven that playing an instrument is a healthy brain activity. Hopefully the students can use this beginning skill that they will develop in their future music experiences.

Budget Narrative

The Casio keyboards are a medium quality instrument and should last for many years.
