Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 65

We are so thankful for these gifts that we received!

The kids most love the screen for movies and videos. It is the first job everyone picks each week, even before line leader, if you can believe it! I am so proud of how careful they are with it. The screen has been so wonderful allowing students to view videos without my having to erase the board. That’s my favorite part.

Tied for second favorite thing are the light covers and the Calm Strips. The light covers make the students feel like they are in a spaceship far from Earth! They are beautiful and were very easy to install. The Calm Strips are a favorite for so many of the students as they do not always know what to do with their hands and have found these stickers both pretty and enticing to touch.

The supply-type items that we were able to purchase were so helpful. Having calculators of their own. made the students feel like scientists to be able to crunch their own data! And of course the pencils and erasers came in handy! Some pencils are still in circulation but the erasers have done their jobs and been used up! On that note, the manual pencil sharpeners we got came with erasers, to my surprise! So they have been doubly helpful!

And my Spanish speaking students were tickled to see the Spanish translations on everything from the Brother P-touch! They even corrected a few of them. They really loved that! We also learned that every Spanish culture doesn’t use the same names for everything.

Thank you again to Champtions for Learning for fulfilling our wishes!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like to create an engaging and accessible science classroom for all of our 63 fourth graders.

What will be done with my students

All three classes (63 students) of fourth graders will easily be able to work with their data, see supplemental videos in class simply and clearly, write and erase in their science notebooks, read and learn the names of our science tools and supplies in two languages, and be in a cool science environment with the galaxy light covers.

Benefits to my students

Throughout the year, our fourth graders will be doing experiments that will require them to take measurements. In order for their experiments to be considered valid, they will need to repeat measurements at least three times. And to interpret and understand their data, they will need to get averages of that data. In our experiments, the weights and lengths are almost never “clean” whole numbers. Averaging numbers like 40.66, 20.23 and 35.93, is something they have not yet learned and becomes a whole new lesson taking the wind out of their “science sails”.

A pull-down projection screen will enable me to use both white boards in my room as well as show supplemental videos. The L brackets will allow us to install the screen over one of the white boards as that is the best spot for projecting.

Pencils and erasers need to be in constant supply. Surprisingly, we have already used half of the pencils and erasers with which we began the year!

Our group of fourth graders includes many English Language learners and quite a few students who are not reading on level. I would like to use the label maker to make English/Spanish word labels for the plastic totes in my room that contain our science tools and supplies so that all of our students will learn the names and possibly spellings for the items they will be using throughout the year.

There are nine fluorescent lights in our classroom. I would like to use five light covers that showcase the beauty of outer space to eliminate the harsh glow of the lights and inspire my students to learn more about our beautiful universe.
