Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

The grant to fund the class set of ukuleles, along with ukulele stands to hold them, will benefit students for multiple years! It will be the grant that keeps on giving! Here are some noted outcomes of this grant.

  • Brought excitment to the music classroom to see brand new instruments.
  • Provided students an opportunity to experience playing a stringed instrument.
  • Promotes preseverance: learning a new instrument is difficult. What may seem impossible on day 1, becomes possible after more days of instruction and practice.  This promotes working hard, sticking to a challenge, and overcoming struggles.
  • Promotes reading and listening skills.  Music is read from left to right, is connected to math, and to put it all together requires the use of multiple parts of the brain.
  • Students have individual sucess as well as whole group ensemble sucess.
  • Increase eye-hand coordiation.
  • Social Skills: Students assist classmates with learning and cultivate teamwork when playing together.
  • Responsibility: Students learn how to care for the instrument.
  • Ensemble musician development: Students learn to listen, silently, to instruction and to play at the apporiate time.
  • Builds confidence through the process of learning something new.
  • Pure joy in music making!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To spark joy ,as students learn musical concepts, while playing the ukulele. A class set of Ukuleles will be used for consecutive school years, impacting unlimited number of students.

What will be done with my students

Learning to play the ukulele meets multiple music standards. Students will achieve the sense of accomplishment as they learn to play, this relatively, simple musical instrument. They will work individually, in small ensembles, and large ensemble. As students progress they will have the opportunity continue to learn and master new skills based on individual ability and desire.

Benefits to my students

1. Herbert Cambridge Elementary is a Title 1 school. Many will not have the opportunity to play on musical instruments. Fulfillment of this grant will provide ukuleles for these students.
2.Beginner friendly instrument which promotes success and builds confidence.
3. Learning to play musical instruments is linked to increased student test scores. Playing the ukulele in Elementary School could spark an interest to learn a new instrument in secondary school.
4. Promotes focus and discipline. Life long skills needed for success.
5. Stress reliever: Students can immerse themselves into the art of playing the ukulele which can be a great distraction from the stresses of the day.
6. Sense of accomplishment as students learn and master skills. Life lesson: With invested time, they can accomplish hard things.
