Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 7

Planting a garden had a huge impact on my transition students. Students took a field trip to home depot and had a budget of $600 to spend on gardening supplies and plants. Students picked out items they wanted to plant. Students really enjoyed going to home depot and learned how to deduct the cost of the item from the total amount of $600.

The next day, students put together one of the earth boxes we purchased. Theen, students added soil to the box and learned how to care for their plant. Students really enjoyed this project. Not only did students learn problem-solving skills, they also are continuing to learn how to care for their plant. Planting is a great independent skill to learn. Studnets will continue to care for their plant the reminaing of this school year and next school year. They are understanding what it means to be responsible. We really appreciate the money donated for my tranisiton students as they have never had this opportunity. Planting a garden is a skill they can take with them once they exit the transition program.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal for my students with intellectual disabilities is to teach them how to properly plant, care for and maintain a garden. My goal is to build my students self-esteem and create independence and a sense of community along with responsibility.

What will be done with my students

My students will take a field trip to Home Depot. They will pick out soil, gardening tools, gloves, and a vegetable of their choice to plant.(I will teach a lesson on gardening before we go to Home Depot)
Students will dig, use soil, and plant their purchased vegetable. Students will have to plant, water and take care of their vegetable. They will learn how to use the appropriate tools and the correct outside area to plant their vegetable.

Benefits to my students

Most, if not all of my students, have never planted anything before. This provides a wonderful opportunity for them. Students will learn how to work as a team to produce a well maintained garden. Students will use appropriate tools which expands their skill set. Students will use problem-solving skills. This great opportunity really allows them to be on hands on (which is extremely beneficial). Gardening is also a wonderful way to reduce stress and build self-esteem. By caring for and maintaining a garden, it teaches students responsibility. Knowing how to garden is a life functioning skill. It gives purpose and meaning to life to have a responsibility to care for something such as this. My students really need this opportunity to further their skill knowledge and develop a sense of purpose.

Budget Narrative

This money will be used at Home Depot to purchase tools for the students to grow and maintain a garden.
